how to listen to ipod on computer speakers WITHOUT iTunes?

I thought it might be as simple as this (see photo http://postimg.org/image/6cjo6df3n/) User uploaded file

- connecting the ipod's headphone jack to the headphone jack on my external speakers with a connector cable I bought for the purpose - but no this doesn't work. No iPod sound comes out of the speakers.

This is my workstation at work. The external speakers, which work fine (headphones plugged in work correctly), need to stay connected to the PC (on right). If I plug the connector cable into the iMac (on left), it launches iTunes, which I'm not supposed to use at work, and requires signing in to iTunes,which I don't want to do.

- I don't want to install any software on anything.

- I don't want to use headphones - my office is away from others and i can play music loud.

Do I need to buy separate external speakers or is there an easy fix?

iMac = Yosemite

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Since you state that you must leave that connected to your computer, then you cannot also have the iPod connected to it at the same time.

The headphone jack on the front of the speakers is for connecting headphones to, so that the sound that was coming out of the speakers would then be coming out of the headphones. You cannot connect it up the way you have it in the picture because that is not an input socket. (The sound comes out of that socket, it cannot go "in".)

All I can suggest (if you cannot use headphones) is to buy another set of speakers, similar to the pair you have in the picture - and use that new set for the iPod.
