All you experts out there... What exactly does the "optimize" button do in the application, "Memory Diag"?

I've been trying to increase the performance of my computer, and decrease the instances of my fan running loudly in class... This has been happening lately, and it is almost to the point of being disruptive. The thing that gets me is that it seems to be over pretty much nothing. When I check activity monitor, it is a mix of safari microsoft powerpoint, and kernel task that always seem to be taking up so much memory. Basically, I want to know if the application memory dig is something that I should be using on my mac to decrease overall CPU usage when the fan begins to hum loudly. Or what else I could do to ensure that my CPU doesn't reach the point of loud fan hummage. have an early 2011 macbook pro, 4 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3, 2.3 GHz intel core i5.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

You do not want to add any third party apps to maintain OS X. They are generally scams and don't do anything more then OS X itself can do.

Here's a scenario for a typical situation in which the fan starts to hum loudly... I open my computer (awaken it from sleep mode), open safari, go to my class website, download my notes and then open them with powerpoint. At this point my mac can't seem to handle it, and the fan starts to kick it in hyperdrive. This seems a bit abnormal to me. I have been playing around with memory diag for the last few days because i have been googling and have seen a lot of positive feedback about it. from what I can tell, when my computer is operating at a high CPU and then I go to memory diag and click optimize it does something which seems to open up ram space and allow my computer to run more efficiently. I just want to know what this optimization does!

I would suggest that uninstall Memory Diag. The memory application especially with Yosemite where memory management was changed are actually working the exact opposite of the way Yosemite is work so all they do it fight each other.

Since it appears you are running Windows in VirtualBox, the 4 GB of RAM is far too small to handle that. I suggest you consider upgrading the amount RAM that is installed.
