i try the disk utility and what i got is disk object invalid or unable to serialize. does it mean i need to replace my hard drive? thanks
Yes, that is what it usually means.
I just went through this after restorying from Time Machine after a major crash. I kept getting the "Prohibited" icon after a couple restorals. I ran the Hardware diagnostic program, which found no problems. I then ran Disk Utility, which saw the Apple partition and the main partition. Both passed the tests, although I got an error message about "unable to unmount drive" at the end. I noticed my disk did not have a mount point. I repaired the Disk Permissions, then ran Verify Disk - no problems. I restarted the computer and was able to log in.
HTH.....
