If you choose a third party display then you will need a mini-display port to either VGA, HDMI, or DVI adapter available from Apple, the type of adapter is depending on the connection your external display has. Apple explains how simple it is in OS X: How to use multiple displays with your Mac in Mountain Lion and earlier - Apple Support. It's so incredibly simple you are likely over thinking it.
