What does it mean your browser is not supported?

I'm using Safari 5.1.10 on my Mac OS X 10.6.8. Both google and yahoo mail message that my browser is no longer supported. What does that mean exactly?

I do not have nor do I wish to have a cell phone of any type. Is the difference between OS X and Maverick basically easier application between pc and cell?

If so is that the basic advantage of updating to Safari 7? Thanks.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

With Snow Leopard, that version of Safari was the last. Gmail stopped officially supporting it...meaning not all of the feature might work as expected when on gmail using that older verison of Safari. Firefox still supports snow leopard OS. That would allow you full functionality. Safari is still my favorite, but I had to use FF until I got my OS updated and that Safari works fine.
