Q: Airport Extreme (6th Gen) and 2Wire 3801HGV incompatibility

Greetings!

I'm having issues with my relatively new Airport Extreme wireless router and how it doesn't seem to play nicely with my AT&T 2Wire 3801HGV modem.

I purchased the new Airport Extreme a few months ago so that we could get better wireless reception throughout our home. About a month later, though, my network went down. An AT&T tech came the next day and spent about an hour poring over my network. He discovered that my Airport Extreme was sending power (?) back to the 2wire modem via the CAT5 cable and causing the modem to stop working and/or fry the modem. He kindly replaced the modem and installed some kind of an in-line surge protector (I think) at the power outlet to reduce this issue.

That worked well for five or six weeks and now, it seems, I'm back to where I was - the modem may be getting fried by the Airport Extreme and I'm losing my internet.

Has anyone else encountered an issue like this and

Mac Pro (Early 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    Hi illuminataphoto,

Based on your post it seems you are experiencing issue with your Wi-Fi network. The following article provides details about the Wireless Diagnostic tool on your Mac. It may help you find a solution:

    Hi Bobby_D,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm already quite familiar with the Wireless diagnostics and used in many times during this process to attempt to resolve the issue.

When the AT&T Tech who visited took his amp meter and could readily detect the current flowing in my ethernet cable between the Airport Extreme and my modem, that sort of sends a signal to me about the problem. And, when the Tech can't detect a current in any other ethernet cable connected to the modem and only detects a current flowing in the ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme when it's connected to any port on the modem, that helps to focus my mind.

I took the Airport Extreme to the local Apple store and they replaced my Airport Extreme...
