From what I've been able to find out in general, when you have the computer in clamshell
mode (usually for use with external display or projector) you'd need to follow certain rules
and they are covered in several Apple Support documents. Also, some of that is covered
in several online topics such as these I found in a search via google:
•MacBook Air how to enable clamshell mode:
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=MacBook+Air+how+to+enable+clamshell+mode
There are articles that cover with or without keyboard attached, (and a preference for USB
keyboard over bluetooth, is expressed) and others variables of the lid closed theme. Also
with or without display attached. So far, nothing about playing music with none of these
devices attached to the computer appears. Although there may be, mentioned somewhere.
Other Support articles appear among with other sources of similar information. One item
that stands clear, is the possibility of the portable computer over-heating with display lid
closed; with it open the keyboard area can help heat escape from the main section faster.
Also, to keep a computer that is running in clamshell (or closed-lid mode) run cooler some
use a computer stand to keep the unit in the air, helps it dissipate heat a little better.
So far, out of twenty something articles, none of them specifically say the portable MB/Air
or other, should be used as a music player with lid closed and without a external display;
or without a keyboard. Also, the unit may overheat if the closed lid and computer are not
able to have sufficient air-flow to cool the unit.
You may have to read through and perform trial and error testing; to be sure to not overheat
your MacBook Air. The process to run the computer with lid closed usually is explained in a
way to suggest the method implies use with an external display, & extra keyboard + mouse.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing!
