Q: Every single thing pinwheeling

Hello everyone!

Just today my 27" iMac (Mid-2011) suddenly began to perform EXTREMELY slowly. Every task is pinwheeling and 90% of the time i cannot force quit, type anything, open spotlight, open a finder window, anything. It's crippling. I cannot get anything to function. The only thing that i can do is move windows around the screen, and forcibly shut the computer down (Holding power button). In Activity Monitor nothing is using more than 500mb's of RAM (Kernel_task being the largest), and my CPU usage never spikes or raises above a few percent.

At first i thought this issue was isolated to just my game, Guild Wars 2. However these issues are occurring outside of the game and must be something system wide. I really need help with this, this computer is literally a brick now.

27" iMac (Mid 2011)

Processor: 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB

Hardrive: 1TB SATA (747.27GB free of 999.35GB)

Thank you so much for your time!

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

This could be a failing HD, also did Apple replace the graphics card in their recall mentioned in iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support

    Hey rkaufmann87!

Thanks for replying, that's really sad to hear A few months ago i wiped the hard drive and reinstalled the OS after my computer wouldn't boot properly. I was hoping that would have gave me a new start. Is there some kind of Hard drive diagnostic i can do or supply to check for that?

Does Apple replace hard drives for this kind of thing? How much is it generally?

You can run AppLe Hardware Test in extended mode 2-3 times. AHT does not always find errors after the first or second pass however if errors are found they are correct. You will then need to take it to an Apple Store or AASP for repair. As for the cost of repair, you will need to get a quote as rates vary by area.

I tried to run the Hardware test while booting up but nothing came up. After a few tries i decided to let me Mac boot up, but the booting progress bar remains stuck at the 35% mark for a very very long time. I had to restart the computer a few times until the final time where i left it for 15mins and the progress bar finally completed (and logged in). Something similar happened to me months ago, where the Mac could not boot up at all and remained stuck at the 35% mark indefinitely. I don't know if this is more evidence that will be helpful?

You need to take it in to be professionally diagnosed.
