Have you tested that the MBP USB ports are working?
Have you tried different cables?
Does the HDD work on other macs.
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility?
Have you tried the bare HDD in another enclosure?
Ciao.
Last week external hard disk (Seagate Go Flex Desk 2TB) dissappered from Finder. I have checked in Disk Utility, it is not there. Also the lights on the external drive does not light up. Am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5.
I also connected the seagate drive to another mac book and it did not read also.
The drive was working perfectly for about 1.5 years until last week. The USB and power cable is working as I have checked it on PC - the seagate drive runs/and lights up. I am suspecting the USB cable was improperly ejected and am not sure if this is the problem.
Have you taken out the bare drive from the enclosure and reinstalled it into a known functioning enclosure?
Ciao.
HI, Not yet. The other day i plugged into a PC to see if the power is working and it did. The external hard disk did light up and could feel the thing running. This means the power and USB is ok right ? or should I get teh bare drive out? thanks,
If the PC sees it, do not physically separate the enclosure and drive just yet. Does the drive run off USB power or wall power? I run all USB devices through a wall-powered USB hub instead of through the USB port on my Mac.
Or it may not be this.
Another reason to not physically separate them yet ... at least some WD external drive combos have interface cards that perform special encoding on the drive contents and the drive may be unreadable if not attached through the original interface card.
The OP says the HDD in question is a Seagate. Any possible issues as you describe with the WD?
Ciao.
If the HDD light turns on and you can feel it spinning, that is not conclusive that the HDD is 100% functional. If you can read and write to it on the PC, then it is 'healthy'.
Ciao.
I have this problem too. I've just upgraded to el capitan, 10.11.1 and I can't read my external hard drive. It does show up in disk utility but how do I access the information on it or get it to work again?
Thanks!
