recovery mode time too short to restore iPhone 4s

I have created a new passcode on my phone which I must have mistyped as I cannot now get into my phone.

I have tried 6 times to restore it in various ways according to the Apple support pages and still no luck.

The added issue is the "Find my iPhone" is still active on the phone, which I of course cannot access to switch off.

This is further impacted by the fact a forum suggested to erase the device from iCloud's "Find my iPhone" online app. I logged in on the Mac and did so, now there's no listing of the phone there. Still iTunes refuses to allow me to restore the phone.

I have tried recovery mode but the download takes 45mins to an hour and recovery times out after 15mins? Logically this is a fail.

I am currently trying a 7th download of 1.5GB (1hrs each time) in DFU mode. If this doesn't work, do I simply have a 'brick'!?

Someone from Apple please help as this is incredible that I have a perfectly usable phone but can't use it.

OK. I think we have found a solution.

Downloaded the iOS8 via iTunes. Located the actual IPSW file in user/Library/iTunes/iPhone

Copied it to the desktop as soon as it had finished uploading.

Then started iPhone in recovery mode (as per Apple instructions)

Re did the restore but held down ALT key and selected the desktop version.

This way the extraction takes seconds and not an hour so it doesn't overtake the time out.

This is now sorted!
