Time Machine Backup hangs on both USB and Time Capsule

Hello!

I have some problems with Time Machine backing up my MacBook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 running Yosemite 10.10.2.

I am using the MacBook both in the office and at home attached to a USB hub with KeyBord and external screen. The MacBook is usually closed and I put in sleep mode ("Ruhezustand" in German) when changing the location.

In my office I have a Time Capsule and at home I am attaching an USB 3 external hard disc directly to the free USB port on the MacBook. Everything worked fine for a long time and I did not pay much attention to the updating process itself.

Since a couple of weeks I have the problem, that Time Machine Backup hangs - on both USB-Drive and Time Capsule. This could happen at different positions like 550 MB of x.x GB or 3 KB of x.x GB (Calculating Time Remaining).

The only way to run the backup completely is to restart the Mac. Then everything runs fine and the following automatic backups are running smoothly, too. It seems the problem only occours after moving from one location to another.

I tried checking the Volume of the Mac and the USB drive and also tried repairing Rights on the Volume.

I also tried resetting the pram during the start-up procedure.

Changes I made in the last months are moving from Mavericks to Yosemity, replacing old Cherry Keyboards with Apple keyboards and updating a driver for the USB-Hub including Lan-Access.

Thank you for your help!

Markus

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an abnormal backup. Now

CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD

so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Here are the logs from three manual attempts to backup to USB-Drive. The first two were stopped manually, because they were stuck like the backups before.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.

The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.

Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.

2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.

You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.

In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.

You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.

Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.

☞ Paste into the window of another application.

☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.

5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.

You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.

7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1297 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 6 6 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1536 475 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20 Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.

9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter

exec bash

and press return. Then paste the script again.

10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

[Process started]

Part 1 of 8 done at … sec

Part 8 of 8 done at … sec

The test results are on the Clipboard.

Please close this window.

[Process completed]

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.

Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.

12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

Ok, I got a lot of results. I hope this information is helpful. Keep in mind I restarted the machine and Time Machine is now working fine. This will probably be the case until I am in the office again (not before Tuesday).

Remove the ASIX Ethernet driver and see whether there's an improvement.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

B

The test results show other issues that may or may not be related to the original question.

The X-Rite software is throwing hundreds of system errors per second. Either remove it, update it, or refer to its developer for support.

C

The symbol cache file is very large. It stores data used in logs and crash reports, and it may have grown because there have been a lot of crashes. The file is created automatically, and if deleted, it should be recreated when you restart the computer. Initially, at least, it will be a lot smaller.

I've seen one unverified report that a system became unbootable when the cache was deleted. That would have been due to a corrupt installation of OS X, but you should be prepared to reinstall if necessary. There is no reason to panic as long as you have good backups, which you should already have if you got this far.

Enter the following command in the same way as before:

sudo mv /S*/*/Caches/com.apple.coresymbolicationd /tmp/

Restart the computer.

D

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Step 1

If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.

Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):

sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.

Step 2 (optional)

Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

Utilities Terminal

from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:

resetp

Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:

resetpassword

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.

Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

Select

Restart

from the menu bar.

E

Back up all data.

Run the following command in the same way as before. It moves to the Trash "semaphore" files that have not been cleaned up by the system and may be interfering with normal operation. The files are empty; they contain no data. There will be no output this time.

find L*/{Con*/*/Data/L*/,}Pref* -type f -size 0c -name *.plist.??????? -exec mv {} .Trash/ \; 2>&-

Log out or restart the computer and empty the Trash.

F

If you still have problems after all the above, open the iCloud pane in System Preferences. If the box marked iCloud Drive is checked, uncheck it and confirm. Your iCloud documents should be preserved on Apple's servers.

Test to see whether there's an improvement, then re-check the box and test again. It may take a noticeable amount of time for your iCloud Drive documents to resynchronize.

G

In the General pane of System Preferences, uncheck the box marked

Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices

Test.

H

Storing many files on the Desktop may slow down the Finder, especially if the files have custom icons. Move most or all of the files to another subfolder of your home folder.

I

If all else fails, you may be dealing with a drive failure or some other internal hardware fault.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Hello Linc,

thank you very much for your detailed instructions!

Here is my feedback:

A

The ASIX Ethernet driver seemed to be properly removed from the system by using the ASIX uninstall script. It belonged to a USB "Docking Station" that provided an ethernet port. I bought 2 of them for my office and my home and as this is my first Mac after years of Windows it seemed nothing wrong with installing the driver.

It caused some problems in the past with crashing the system when pulling off the USB plug in combination with mail checking for new mails on the Managed Exchange server (Mail and Hosted/Managed Exchange is another story but probably not important here). After deinstalling it and going with a newer Version when updating to Yosemite the problem was gone and I thought everything was fine now.

For the next time I will be able to use WIFI. But perhaps you have a recommendation for an USB-Hub including Ethernet or an (affordable) Thunderbolt solution with USB and Ethernet-Support.

B

I had issues with this software some time ago filling the console-log. But I thought I resolved it by moving the file com.aladdin.hasplmd.plist. The software belongs to i2 Display Pro, a device for color-profiling.

Can you see, if the issue still exists or only if it was there some time ago?

C

I followed your instructions without having any problems.

D

I followed Step 1 without any problems. As I only have one user and one guest user account, I skipped Step 2.

E

No problems following your instructions

F

I unchecked and checked iCloud-Drive. I will keep this in mind, if the backup problem will persist as I am using iCloud drive with some apps.

G

Handoff was unchecked already. I did this some time ago.

H

Cleaning up my messy Desktop is something on my To-Do-List. I pushed it more to the top of this list now. 🙂

I

I hope this will not be necessary. But as I am still in the first year and have guaranty, are there any tests I can perform myself with OS X?

J

One more question: Some of your commands moved files. As Time Machine is backing up 62 GB I think I moved a lot of data (to tmp?). As the internal drive is not too big, is it save to delete this files if the systems runs still fine?

Thank you very much for taking so much time to write that detailed instructions. As the problem with Time Machine only seem to happen when changing locations, I will monitor Time Machine during the next week or so and give feedback if the problem is solved.

Best regards from Germany

Mar 30, 2015 11:52 AM in response to Linc Davis

I kept an eye on the system-behavior in the last week and the problem with TimeMachine persists.

As said I removed the ASIX driver and even removed the USB 3.0 Hub belonging to this driver completely.

The error only occurs when leaving / changing location. It did not only occur when changing between home and office but I could also see it when leaving the office with the MacBook, not using it at a client meeting and getting back to the office.

As the TimeMachine works fine when staying at the same place (as well at home even over the weekend as in the office during the whole day) I assume the cause in the procedure when connecting / disconnecting the MacBook.

The scenario is the following:

1. I always use the MacBook with the lid closed.

2. There is a Dell-Screen attached via DisplayPort at the Office and via Apple Thunderbolt2DVI-Adapter at home. Both screens run different resolutions.

3. The MagSafe-Power-Cord is always connected.

4. At the moment I use the USB-Hub included in the Dell-Screens to connect Keyboard, Mouse and a Scanner at the office.

5. When leaving a location (both home and office) I send the Mac to sleep using ALT-CMD-Eject on the attached Apple USB Keyboard. Then I disconnect screen (Thunderbolt-Port), USB and Power. At the moment there is no ethernet connected, so WLAN should disconnect when leaving the place.

6. When arriving at a location the procedure is the other way around.

When the problem with TimeMachine occurs, it hangs at the first attempt after arriving / connecting. It always starts but hangs after a few KB or some MB.

I remember this working fine in Mavericks. Maybe - but not sure - this came with one of the Yosemite-Updates. Perhaps waiting for 10.10.3 will solve the problem?

Time Machine Backup hangs on both USB and Time Capsule
