My Yosemite MacBook Pro will not sleep

My MacBook Pro (17-inch, Ealy 2008) is on OS X 10.10.2 and will not sleep when it is plugged in, neither when I close the lid nor when I choose “Sleep” from the  menu.

Here is what the console typically logs from when the lid is closed until about when I open it again, with no applications running except the Finder:

I have already turned off both “Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer” in the Bluetooth System Preferences (and actually turned off Bluetooth alltogether), and “Wake for network access” in the Energy Saver System Preferences, there are no Login Items in my Users & Groups System Preferences, and I have “Turn on Do Not Disturb When the display is sleeping” in the Notifications System Preferences. Oh, and I have no USB accessories or other peripherals connected to any physical ports.

Does anybody please have any suggestions on how to get the machine to sleep, when plugged in?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you.

Yes! Initially three, intermittently four, of them, and after a while just one:

  • hidd, presumably the Human Interface Device Daemon (persistently 'Yes')
  • softwareupdated (changes to 'No' after a few minutes)
  • kernel_task (changes to 'No' after a few minutes)
  • and mds_stores (every now and then for up to a few minutes at a time)

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

pmset -g assertions | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:

Step 1

Take all the applicable steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computer will not sleep if some sharing services are enabled.

Step 2

From the menu bar, select

 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off

Step 3

Select

 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...

and uncheck both boxes marked

Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...

Step 4

In the Printers & Scanners preference pane, delete any duplicate printers.
