IPad Air, has anyone had a problem where when you are tapping or dragging on the right middle of the screen and it seems to get confused and goes black and restarts itself?

I Have never heard of this and the device should never restart on its own while you are touching or swiping on the screen. You might have a hardware problem, but you have to rule out software an app issues first.
Start by closing all apps.
Force an app to close in iOS - Apple Support
Then follow that with a reset. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad start up.
See if that makes any difference.
