What is the difference between red x and yellow minimize?

On windows, there is a red x, yellow minimize, and a green maximize. What is the difference between the red x and yellow minimize? They both close the window, and when I reopen the window, it looks exactly the same.

I would like to know why the behavior isn't consistent also.

If you mean, why Apple chose to allow the application's programer to decide how the Red button behaves, the volunteers in this forum would not know.

But as others have said, the Red button behavior is under the control the application programmer.

Apple's initial guidelines were that the Red button closed the windows, but the application would continue to run until it was "Quit". But since Windows used a different behavior, some authors decided to emulate Windows behavior. Over the years, this behavior has even made its way into some Apple created apps.

The red icon will either close the currently opened application window (this is the typical behaviour in most apps), or it will quit the application. What it does depends on the application. For example, clicking it in Safari only closes the window and doesn't quit the application. Clicking it in iPhoto will quit the application.

The yellow icon minimizes the window to your dock. It'll either minimize it near the trash, or into the dock icon itself, depending on your settings.

The green icon will either maximize to full screen, or zoom the window larger, depending on the application. For applications that maximize full screen, if you click the green icon while holding option, it will zoom the window instead.

In OS X development, the developer can program the application to Terminate when the last window is closed. If there is a single window present, and you click its red traffic light, then the application will quit. Otherwise, it is a signal to close the window, and its open document. In this case, the window is gone, and the document will need to be reopened via the File menu : Open..., or File menu : Open Recent sub-menu.

The yellow traffic light is intended to minimize the open application window (and document) to the Dock. Depending on the Dock preferences setting, it may minimize to a icon version of the window contents to the right-hand side of the Dock, or simply minimize into the actual application icon. In either case, clicking on the application, or Dock icon will restore the original window and contents.
