FaceTime has no out going mic on I hear them but they don't hear me

MY iPad mini in FaceTime has no out going volume, I can hear them , but they canot hear me! I've checked mute, mic settings, FaceTime settings, still nothing going out! Not sure but it may have never worked, did a hard and totall reset, still nothing! Does this mean my mic is inoperable?
