Q: Bootcamp issues, tried 9 times (rather long post)

Hi there,

I am having a real problem trying to install either Win7 Ultimate or Win8Pro on a boot-camp partition....I have rally tried about 9 times with no success, 6 times for Win7 and 3 fore Win8.

I start with the boot-camp assistant and do NOT set the opin to cerate a windows isntall disk, as I have trhe dvd's with me (although I did select that oprion on 2 of the occasions which also did not work.

With all of the Win7 attempts I have come up with a "please insert a boot-disk and press any key", or sometimes just a blank black screen.

The closed I get is with Win8 Pro and to get there I hadn ro reboot and hold the alst key down to selct a boot device, of which there are many but the a 2 windows ones, (one is the windows disk sitting in the DVD drive) and the other is an efi boot. I tried the windows disk biut got the same error, with the sentence insert a boot disk and press any key etc, so I thought I would try the efi boot, which then gave a me a message.pess any key to install from the DVD, which I did and then finally I get a  windows installation screen :-)

So all was going well with the install until I get to select the boot-camp drive to install to, and there is an error and you cannot install windows on the drive 0 partition 3, so I first formatted the disk form the install screen, but get the same error.

So, after looking in the internet and going back the the beginning, formatted the disk as ex fat, as it seemed this had worked for others online, but nope, still no lick with that.

I am using a 2 year old iMac under Mavericks and can dual boot to Yosemite, so have tried this with both versions of OSX.

Back when I had mountain lion/lion etc, I had successfully installed windows onto a boot-camp partition, but that disk eventually died and I did not have a spare win-clone copy.

I know I can use and have/do use VMware of similar, but some windows software will not install on a VM. Now you are probably wondering why on earth do you want to put windows on your mac i the first instance.....?

Easy answer for me, I get to run my windows apps natively on my awesome mac hardware :-)

Hope someone can help with an answer...?

kind regards

Rossco

If your iMac has a built-in Optical drive, you must use the physical DVD. You will also need a USB2 flash disk (not a USB3) to be able hold Bootcamp Drivers.

    1. Run BC Assistant. If you have a previous BC partition Remove it.

    2. Insert DVD.

    3. Insert USB2. This will be erased and re-formatted.

    4. Check all boxes.  (Remove the USB creation option, it is a bad idea and causes the 'No bootable device" errors).

    5. Partition your internal drive when asked. The only other OS on your internal disk should be OS X. Please do not manually partition the disk via Disk Utility. If you have delete all such manually created partitions.

Your iMac may support EFI installation if it is not in this list. EFI installation does not need Bootcamp Assistant, but it does need the BC drivers to support Apple-specific hardware.

You have a 2012 27-in iMac according to How to identify iMac models - Apple Support. This will not support EFI installations. It may work partially, but some of your hardware will not work properly in Windows, like Graphics or Audio.

Do not use a USB3 flash disk for BC drivers. On an iMac, please also try, all USB ports, starting from the right-most USB slot when facing the iMac.

You can install Windows, but it should be done using a legacy BIOS (MBR) installation. EFI installation will not work. If your iMac came with a built-in Optical drive, you will need to use a physical DVD. If you have an ISO, you can burn it to a physical DVD at the burn rat recommended for the physical media using Disk Utility 12.x: Burn a disk image to a CD or DVD.

    HI Again,

I have just followed your instructions and everything goes fine until the restart. After restart I would expect the installation of Windows to start and I can hear the DVD spin up and see the usb2 thumb drive flash several times, then after a couple of minutes pass, the screen just goes black, leave it for another 10 minutes or so and still black screen....

    Any other options left..?

    Cheers

This may not work. I am not aware of Windows Installers supporting FW Optical drives. If Windows installs BC drivers, then FW support is available, but not before that.

Yes. Can you try and find a USB2 Optical Drive? Also, when you run BC Assistant, do you get an option to build a USB Installer? If you see it then use Boot Camp: Creating an ISO image from a Windows installation DVD - Apple Support to create an ISO and create a USB Installer and test.

    HI,

just dd that and the same result....

Although it has made me wonder, does the installer when rebooting, try to access the Windows ISO just created, or is it just installer from the usb stick...?

    Cheers

If you choose the first option, the BCA will integrate the ISO and put it on the USB device.  There are some possible issues

    1. The DVD/ISO are corrupted. Microsoft has a tool called FCIV, which can be used to verify the DVD/ISO.

    2. Since you have an iMac which has multiple USB ports in the back, can you test with each port? It is a bit tedious, but it eliminates some problems.

    3. What specific GPU do you have (based on iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) - Technical Specifications)

    Graphics

    • 2.9GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR5 memory
    • 3.2GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
Configurable to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

    Hi Loner T,

Same problem....however I had another idea that I thought might work, and that was to install Yosemite on an external drive and then install bootcamp/windows on that, however that gave me another issue...

I have named the Yosemite install as Yosemite HD, but bootcamp insists on using Macintosh HD to install bootcamp on and I can't seem to change that......

**** frustrating this instlal is becoming...

Cheers and thanks for your time/patience

    kind regards

You have a CTO iMac (customized order). You can boot from an external OS X, but you should install Windows only on a SATA or PCIe disk. Bootcamp Assistant has a check for it, and you can see the corresponding messages in Applications -> Utilities -> Console logs.
