Q: Apple TV Drops Audio with iTunes

I use my Apple TV to play music from my iTunes Library on my MacBook Pro, however it randomly drops out and I need to go back to iTunes to start it again.  I have done the following:

- Reset the Apple TV

- Restored the Apple TV via my Mac

- Reset the WiFi and tried a different Channel

- Restrated my MacBook Pro

I have the same Library on an older iMac, tried a different Router including a Time Capsule so I am thinking it must be the Apple TV, which to be one was one of the very first models when they moved to the smaller black boxes (i.e. doesn't support 1080p etc).

Any thoughts before I replace the Apple TV?  It use to be fine so thinking its just getting old?  My iTunes Library is about 400GB and no other apps give me a problem or cause drop out.

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

    Hello Alex,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

From your post I understand that the Home Sharing connection between your Mac and Apple TV is randomly disconnecting.  To troubleshoot this issue please follow the directions in the article below starting at step 4.

Thank you but this didn't resolve my issues

It randomly drops out still and doesn't even sometime connect, but then works fine for days.

network interruption is a more likely cause then the Apple TV itself in which case getting a newer one would not help

I would test connecting them to each other by ethernet cables to verify the issue is only present on wifi

and then begin general troubleshooting network quality

dect old landline wireless phones also operates on 2.4Ghz

rmicrowave ovens make noise on 2.4Ghz

metal in the wall between the devices and interfeer with wifi there are many factors

Hmm OK thanks - I bought a new Apple TV anyway as they are so cheap to take advantage of the 1080p on my new larger screen.

I will try a new location for the Router maybe....
