internal microphone does not work after updating to 10.9.5

After hard drive died and replaced with a new hard drive, 10.9.5 was installed. Ran diagnostics and reset PRAM, but the internal microphone no longer works. Early 2008 iMac, 4GB RAM, 2.4 Ghz processor. Any suggestions?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

First, check your Mac's System Preferences... > Sound to be certain that both input and output sound levels are set correctly. If they are, try the following in order:

(1) Backup your Mac. Print the instructions in this link. Then reinstall OS X using the method in the linked instructions. Now test your microphone again.

(2) If the microphone problem continues, politely ask whoever replaced your hard drive to troubleshoot and repair the microphone. They may have left a connection undone during the hard drive repair.
