Q: My User and Password disappeared!

I tried to start the Yosemite twice and the initialization not continued. The third time the Yosemite presented a screen that I did not know until then, ordering and enter the password, so the user name. I entered my username and password usual, but did not work. Sought help in specialized websites and what I found were recommendations to remake the user password using the Recovery mode.

Theoretically, typing "ResetPassword" from the Terminal, should appear the following screen showing a list of users so I should select the one whose password I want to reset. To my amazement, on my computer no longer has any user !!! See below:

My iMac has Windows 8.1 Pro installed on the Bootcamp partition and through it I can still see my user folder (helton).

Apparently all my files are there. My question is, what can have happened? I'll get somehow take back my username and password? I'll have to format the partition that has the Mac OS? And the Windows partition, will be intact? I'm at a dead end and a problem that never come across before!

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I couldn't tell you exactly what happened, but following these steps should resolve your issue.

    1. Boot into Single User Mode by holding down Command + S as the computer is starting up.

    2. Once you're in Single User Mode, you'll need to mount the drive by typing the following command and hitting enter.

    /sbin/mount -uw /

    3. Next, you'll need to type the following command and hit enter.

    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone

    4. Next, you'll need to type the following command and hit enter.

    reboot

    5. Your computer should now restart taking you to the setup assistant just like a new computer. This will allow you to create a new Administrator account. Proceed through the setup questions, but make sure your account name does not conflict with helton. Just make the username "admin".

    6. Once you're at the Desktop, select the Apple from the menu bar and open System Preferences > Users & Groups.

    7. If your main account isn't listed there, you'll need to reinstate the account. To do this, click the lock and enter the password for the account you just created. Select the + icon under Login Options. Change the account type to Administrator. Make sure the account name is "helton". You will receive a prompt saying there is an existing user folder, in which you will say that's fine.

    8. Sign out of that account and sign into your main account.

    9. From your main account, go to Users & Groups to remove the temporary admin account.

It looks like you have enabled a FileVault encryption on your Mac. When FileVault is enabled there is a different process of reseting your password:

OS X Mountain Lion: If you forget your login password and FileVault is on

If not FileVault (which would explained why you have an access to your Macinthosh HD drive from Bootcamp) it could be some issue with your startup disk. Open Disk Utility in Recovery Mode and Verify Disk and Repair if need it. And then try it again.

I use Paragon to access the bootcamp and the Macintosh HD. I must proceed the way you recommended?
