Replace/ upgrade hard drive cost

So my hard drive has S.M.A.R.T. and has to be replaced. Does anyone know what the cost is to have apple do it? And does anyone know what the cost would be to have them upgrade the hard drive while I was at it? from the 750gb to a 1T solid state? I really like the idea of the solid state now that this has happened. Everything was great on this computer until this year, now it's been one thing after another it feels like.

"jewlers tool set"

Unlikely to have the #6 Torx.

I get the set from Harbor Freight, cheap (Well that goes without saying!) but hold up surprisingly well. I have 6 sets. They used to have a set like this in an orange case that was my favorite. So somewhere on my workbench, briefcase or traveling case I have 6 #6 Torx and can only fine 1! :

So like Ogelthorpe says your computer will rip w/ a SSD.

I only deal with OWC and there are many reasons that I do:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/

Never had a problem w/ anything I've ever bought from them in at least 8 years or so. They are Mac specialists so everything they sell works without any hassle. I have a early 2011 MBP 13". I put a 120 GB SSD from OWC in it andI bumped the RAM to 8 GB. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5. I've been avoiding Yosemite w/ all the issues we see around here.

Photoshop CS 6 opens in 3.4 seconds. I typically have 5 desktops open, 3 browsers, Photoshop and Word and probably an average of 12 windows open at one time. Never see the spinning ball. I went w/ the smaller SSD for budget reasons. If I needed a lot of storage I'd run a conventional hard drove as a disk doubler (Check OWC site for that.) or an external.

What size is your MBP?

"now it's been one thing after another it feels like."

What things after the other?

If it's a 15 or 17" there are issues:

"And the screen thing on 15" macs? It has been affecting mine occasionally. I had not even heard of the recall, so I was pushing through. "

OK so run your serial number here:

At the very least you'll have started a case file that Apple can refer to.

"It has been affecting mine occasionally. "

Yah, see that's not good because it will only get worse. So go for the recall ASAP.

" I find the guy sitting next to me used to work for apple."

So get him to consult on the SSD install. It's actually dead simple as Ogelthorpe points out.

Your computer sounds like it's pretty old, so Apple may not work on it any longer. Normally, they charge for parts and labor. Labor runs $75-85 per hour and they charge full retail for the parts. If you are willing to buy your own parts and install them yourself, then your costs would be much less. Today a good SSD costs around $0.50/GB, so a 1 TB SSD would be in the neighborhood of $500.00. Since you posted in the MacBook Pro forum I'm assuming that's what you have rather than the Mac Pro listed in your profile.

I suggest you might visit OWC to take a look at some good SSDs. Plus, they have online video tutorials available, written installation instructions, and the necessary tools.

I have a few Samsung 840 Pro's (earlier version of the 850), they work fine, read some of the posts on this site for more accolades.

If I was buying them now I wouldn't, I would buy 850's instead, next year there will probably be an 860 and so on. But they are not the only good SSD's the suggestion to look around (from Kappy) especially at OWC is a good one.

Depending on the exact age of your Mac you may not reach the maximum speed of these drives, they will still be very fast, but not as fast as they would be in a newer Mac.

As your Mac is a 2011 model the drives will run at their maximum speeds (thx Ogle)

last summer I had a severe overheating issue, took it in, and they replaced multiple affected parts. A fan had gone out, and by the time I realized, the heat had affected the logic board and a couple other things as well. Thankfully I was still under extended warranty (which paid for itself in that alone, not to mention the two broken chargers). Then, after my warranty ended in December, come February it refused to boot. took it in, they reinstalled the OS. Then this happened.

And the screen thing on 15" macs? It has been affecting mine occasionally. I had not even heard of the recall, so I was pushing through. I graduate in May, and going w/out a computer is really rough right now. I was hoping to push through, then start addressing some issues after the grad ceremony, once I'm done with classes. No such luck apparently. That is when i will be addressing the recall issue, now that I know about it.

I wanted the SSD when I bought the computer. But budget didn't allow for it. They seem to have come down in price a lot since then, so I'm hoping to take advantage and use this as an opportunity to upgrade. I currently have a 750 hard disk drive. since my parents are paying, a lot is going to come down to what they want to pay for. But my Dad is in agreement, that I see what apple is going to charge to put the same drive in again, and compare that to the cost installing of the SSD ourselves. Which is why I have been asking around to see what apple is likely to charge.

Don't bother to find out what Apple will charge. View this video and you will see how easy it is. The cost will be the price of a #00 Phillips driver and a #6 Torx driver.
