I have a used iPhone 4s. When I got I tried turning it on and got no response.I then plugged it in it showed me the Apple logo then went to recovery mode. I've tried updating the software and restoring the phone, they both failed. I can't remember what error code it gave me. When I leave the phone plugged in longer than four minutes the motherboard gets extremely hot. I have no idea what's causing this to happen.

This looks like a hardware problem and you should get it checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place.

Yes, those point to hardware issues. Don't plug it in again to avoid more damage and get it serviced.
I forgot to mention this in the original post but when I had it connected to my computer it wouldn't display a serial number in iTunes. I don't have a Apple service place around here. I'll probably end up taking it to a local phone repair shop and have the motherboard switched out.
Let's hope that works, because after getting it serviced by a 3rd party repair shop, Apple will not service the device anymore.

I finally got my iphone out of recovery mode. it still wont turn on without having it plugged in. Now instead of going to recovery mode it flashes the apple logo. Any ideas on how I might be able to restore it to factory settings with out updating it? I don't want to run IOS 8 it kills the speed on the 4s.
Restoring to factory settings will download the new iOS, there is no way around that. I have no problems running iOS8.1.3 on my 4s.
I found the problem. The battery was junk
