Downgrade back to OS X 10.7.5?

I recently upgraded My 2012 MacBook Pro to Yosemite, and I have to say it is just awful. While the upgrade process itself was fine, ever since the upgrade:

  • It's slow to start and much slower to shut down
  • The battery life is 30-40% less than with 10.7.5
  • Regularly locks up (pinwheel) in browser sessions - Safari, Chrome, Firefox, doesn't matter which browser
  • Less frequently locks up in apps like Evernote, iCal, Mail, etc.

Bottom line is this MacBook Pro is no longer a usable laptop, and I want to go back to 10.7.5. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this.

Yes, read OS X Yosemite: Revert to a previous OS X version. If you have not been using Time Machine you must create a backup first, followed by completely erasing the disk, followed by reinstalling its originally installed OS (presumably Lion), followed by migrating your information from the Time Machine backup.

You ought to determine the cause of the slowdowns and fix it though. Downgrading is not the solution to incompatible or garbage software. Removing or updating that software to a Yosemite compatible version is. I still have Macs that shipped with Lion and they're all enjoying greater performance and much greater battery life with Yosemite than any previous OS. It stands to reason whatever problem is affecting yours can be fixed.

  1. Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support. A failed hard disk drive is one of a number of causes for the symptoms you describe, and if you value the information your Mac contains a backup is required even if it is operating normally.
  2. Then, determine if the symptoms occur in "Safe Mode" (read below). Aside from being a general pain to use in Safe Mode, it should not lock up or stall in the manner you describe. If it does, attention should be given to the possibility of a hardware fault.
  • Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
  • You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
  • Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
  • Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
  • To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

If you are still experiencing problems more information will be required. If you don't know where to start, EtreCheck can help with that. Read below.

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Do not download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).

Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.

It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.

Copy and paste its output in a reply.

Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.

EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

John,

Did the Time Machine backup and tried Safe Mode as you recommended. Thought I had made some progress - deleted Chrome and McAfee End Point Encryption and my Mac Book Pro was still slow but seemed more stable. Then, same symptoms returned. So, downloaded & installed EtreCheck & the diagnostic report follows. Per your instructions, I haven't taken any actions based on this report - for example I have not (yet) removed VirtualBox.

Thanks for any further ideas you might have, based on this report.

Problem description:

Slow startup, slow shutdown, poor battery life, and regular locking up of Safari, Thunderbird, Evernote, and other apps after upgrading my 2012 Mac Book Pro to Yosemite. Last ditch attempt to fix before reverting to 10.7.5 - which worked great BTW.

"Safe Mode" is primarily a troubleshooting aid. Its purpose is to observe a Mac's performance with only required operating system components. Aside from removing certain font cache files and performing a cursory file directory verification and repair, Safe Mode is not intended to remedy any particular problem. Using a Mac in "Safe Mode" is generally inconvenient but it should not crash or freeze in that mode.

That system is rather extensively modified. Certain well-known troublemakers are present that may be responsible for causing the degraded performance you're experiencing:

  1. Oracle's "My Desktop" is crashing frequently. Research its documentation to determine what to do about that, or uninstall it according to its instructions. I suggest the following: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19351-01/821-1925/z40000087941.html
  2. If you require a VPN the version incorporated natively in OS X works well. Cisco's flawed implementation of it may not.
  3. Do you require both Oracle's VirtualBox and Parallels? I have never used Parallels but if I were forced to choose one over the other, it would be VB. Be sure to keep it updated.
  4. I don't know of any offsite, subscription-based backup services that work well on Macs. CrashPlan may be a factor.
  5. An Aladdin anti-piracy product is installed, probably for a USB-connected device. I don't know if you require it or not, but if you do not it should be uninstalled.
  6. Google Chrome litters a Mac with a plethora of root level system modifications in the same manner as a virus would, if such a thing were to exist, which it doesn't. If Safari does not meet your requirements, I suggest Firefox.

Unlike Chrome, Firefox does not alter a Mac's operating system, does not demand full-time root access for purposes known only to it, is not designed to harvest your personal information, and is not known to cause the degraded performance that Google Chrome is notorious for causing.

  7. McAfee's "anti-virus" product remains installed, or was incompletely uninstalled. In any event components of it remain active, so whatever method you used to eradicate it does not appear to have been completely effective. One or more of the following might be applicable:

How to install or uninstall McAfee Internet Security for Mac

How to uninstall and reinstall McAfee Agent 4.x on Macintosh computers

An operating system upgrade always requires confirming compatibility with all third-party software. Consider all the above before contemplating downgrading OS X.

Apr 3, 2015 12:40 PM in response to John Galt

John,

Thanks again for the further recommendations (updates below), but this is starting to look pretty hopeless. This MacBook Pro is still slow as **** and completely unstable.

1. Removed MyDesktop as recommended

2. Lock-up behavior occurred regardless of whether or not VPN was running, plus Cisco VPN Anyconnect worked great on 10.7.5. Today it's locked up on me four times - no VPN connection.

3. Tried to remove Parallels, but Mac locked up during un-install

4. Successfully removed CrashPlan

5. Cannot find any Aladdin products on this Mac, at least not under that name

6. Removed Chrome by dragging it to the Trash. Firefox works up to a point, Safari is completely unstable.

7. None of the folders/un-install options mentioned in the McAfee link appear to be available on this Mac.

After the above, the Mac works for maybe 30 minutes (give or take 10 minutes) between lock-ups. About half of those un-lock if I let it sit for 10 minutes plus, the other half require a hard reboot.

Again, I appreciate your time on this, but I think it's time to call this what it is: a broken Mac. I reached out to my Corporate IT & they declined to help, so unless I can find a way to go back to 10.7.5 without losing all my installed software, I'm f*cked. As is, this thing is nothing but an expensive paper weight.

So, if you know how I can get back to 10.7.5 without losing all my apps, please advise. And, sincerely, I really do appreciate your help so far.

Thanks.

What did you observe while running in "Safe Mode"?

Downgrading OS X won't accomplish anything. Erasing that Mac and reinstalling Yosemite anew followed by reinstalling your essential software and documents might be your best course of action, given the extent of its modifications. Determine or describe what occurred while operating in "Safe Mode" first.

Apr 3, 2015 5:43 PM in response to John Galt

Yeah, not going to happen. I have no installation media for anything on this Mac - it was configured by a vendor we no longer contract with - and my corporate IT group has already declined to help. Too bad, because I really enjoyed using this Mac (on 10.7.5 at least) but it is now a complete train wreck.

Thank God, Buddha, et. al. that I still have a functioning Windows 7 laptop to do my job, because this Yosemite upgrade ruined this Mac, and I'm going to share that fact with anyone that asks. Complete bullsh*t. Never seen anything like it.

Thanks again for your help. Hope you have better luck with the next Yosemite cluster f*ck.

Apr 3, 2015 7:10 PM in response to John Galt

John,

As stated previously, I really do appreciate your help. And I accept full responsibility for what happened to this Mac. I trusted Apple to deploy an upgrade that would work - or at least be smart enough to tell me that it wouldn't work & I shouldn't do it. As one of my colleagues is fond of saying "Assumption is the mother of all f*ckups", and I f*cked up big-time by assuming this upgrade would work, the cost was my nice little MacBook Pro, and I have no one to blame but my own trusting nature. Definitely won't make that mistake again, although it's kind of a moot point as there's nowhere to go from here & I'll be using Windows 7 to make a living from here on out.

Have a nice weekend, and thanks again for your help.

Apr 3, 2015 8:10 PM in response to webbysdad

I understand and thanks for the kind words. Mac users will always encounter problems upon upgrading OS X when their previous operating system was already modified, and those modifications were not updated by their respective developers, or the user failed to keep that software updated. The problem is exacerbated when those modifications alter OS X on such a fundamental level as to interfere with what its normal functions. This has been the case with every OS X upgrade there has ever been, and will be so with every OS X upgrade there will ever be. Mac OS upgrades even prior to OS X were no different.

Inept or lazy software developers are the norm, not the exception. Apple simply does not care if a developer fails to keep their software up to date. However, Apple provides copious documentation for their reference, and supply pre-release copies of OS X so that developers have adequate opportunity to verify and update their software for future OS X release compatibility. Some developers are motivated to do that properly. Sadly, most aren't, because their revenue is primarily derived from selling new software to new users, not releasing free maintenance updates to customers whose money they already collected. Really, the only developer interested in maintaining software with any degree of seriousness is Apple, because they're the only entity with the slightest interest in protecting their brand. As for McAfee or Adobe, they've already got your money so they don't care. Google just wants to harvest your personal information and as long as they can do that they don't care either. Not unlike your Mac vendor — they sold you that Mac and presumably your check cleared, so they're gone.

The problem isn't Yosemite, which runs exceptionally well on all my Macs, better than any preceding version. As I wrote earlier, that system is rather extensively modified with third party software. McAfee is a commonly appearing culprit, but many other potential causes exist on that Mac. There is a way to isolate the potential causes but it has to be performed methodically. There are quite a few steps to it but Safe Mode is practically Step 1 (step 0 being a backup, which you appear to have). It's probably fixable but certain questions such as hardware failure have to be ruled out. You have to decide how much of your time and effort it's worth. My time and effort is offered free of charge.

Apr 3, 2015 8:46 PM in response to webbysdad

I agree with John. There is no magic bullet for uninstalling programs. Some have an unistall most do not. You have to do the research to find out how to uninstall. If you just trash the Goole Chrome app from Applications, you still have parts of it stored in your library. When doing an upgrade of the operating system ,you must make sure the non apple apps are upgraded also . Or if there is no upgrade, uninstalled.
