Q: Trash can shows empty but it is full

Version 10.9.5

 

My Trash can shows empty, but there isa laid of files in it.

 

have tried :

sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash


But still does not empty


I have repaired Disk Permissions , multiple times, logged out and back in, tried suggestions in this thread:

But still the icon shows empty though it is full of items.


Anyone have any ice how I can repair this?

What happens if you take the items out of the trash, reboot, place items back into the trash then delete?

 

Also, do you have any external drives attached?

 

Try starting the computer in Safe Mode and then delete the trash?

    Well the Safe Boot and delete did it. Thanks

     

    I first tried taking all the items out of the Trash and put them in a folder on my desktop.  But they copied out rather than moved...so then I had two copies, one lot in the trash and one lot on the desktop.

     

    Yes, I did also have an external USB drive connected, but this problem did not occur with other users on the machine with the same drive plugged in.

     

     

     

    On re boot after the Safe Boot..the machine did fail to start, it just hung with the spinning beach ball, and I had to hold the power button to power it off. 

     

    Thinking about it, that is the second or third time that has happened.  Some times it fails to boot at all on pressing the Power Button.  The only way to get it to start is then a seemingly random sequence of presses or press and hold of th empower button, in combination with power cycling the mains power/ unplugging the mains power supply.     Guessing this maybe un related ..?? hardware?  have replaced the "CMOS" battery..OK, so not officially called a CMOS battery, PRAM battery?

     

     

    This is the Mac Pro 3,1 2008 Tower.

    Did you physically replace the CMOS battery?  That is not the same thing as resetting the NVRAM/PRAM or SMC.  For example, here is the steps for replacing a CMOS battery in one model of a Mac Pro:

    If you went through all those steps, you did physically replace the CMOS battery.

     

    I asked about the external hard drive because the trash folder tracks both the internal and external hard drive trash, meaning that if your external drive was failing to delete the trash, it would appear (or should appear) in your dock's trash can so long as the external device is attached.  In other words, it may be the external drive's trash that wasn't emptying.  The only way to know it's not the external drive is to remove the external drive from the equation.

     

    If your system is exhibiting issues and this was just one of the recent ones, you might want to further diagnose your system.  Here are a few more things you should check:

    It is possible that it is still has software related issues in that it had issues with the normal boot, but not the Safe Boot.  You might try doing an EtreCheck and posting the results here.  Sometimes it comes down to having certain software trying to micromanage the same functions that your system is designed to handle and the two not playing well together.  This check will often identify the usual suspects among other things.

    Remember, just because you fix one little glitch doesn't mean you resolved the root cause of the glitch.  Problem may never surface again, then again, it may just be a warning of things to come.

    Yes, it was a proper replacement of the battery , with a new one. 

     

    Also just recently had a memory failure, so popped that board out and put just a single board with the 4 original 1GB sticks in.  Still the same random problems.

     

    I did wonder about the external drive too, but then it was working perfectly on the two other users.

     

    I had actually tried multiple threads related to this, and none worked.  SMC reset, PRAM reset, 10 second power button holds etc etc.

     

    I am thinking a clean system instal may well be the answer, rather than an upgrade, then once all is working , and only then, use migration assistant to move Mac mail across., as that seems to be the only reliable way. 

     

    I'll try EtreCheck later...I am away from home now

    It is a 2008 machine, so maybe a PSU issue is the cause of some of the issues ? 

     

    I have popped out all the RAM and HDD's, the graphics cards and cleaned the dust / fluff out of the heatsinks, used Disk Utility to Verify / Repair Disk and Verify Repair Disk permissions where not greyed out.

     

    The other day it started up with Fan on Full power, and I  have seen that mentioned as a possible fault caused by dodgy internal backup battery..hence the new one and PRAM SMC resets.

     

    I'll d/load EtreCheck and see what that says.

    So here is what I was going to say:

     

     

     

    I guess really i should start this as a new thread.  Alos I have made a bit of a mistake here.

     

    I have posted in the 'wrong forum'

     

    I have Yosemite on my laptop, and had been browsing that forum for other stuff when the Trash can issue appeared.  This boot issue is actually on a 10.9.5  OS system on my Mac Pro

     

     

    For this sort of issue...where should i post?  Mac Pro hardware forum or in the OS X 10.9.5 specific forum .?  I'll await your reply before i create a new thread.

     

    Must be something serious going wrong. 
    I have not noticed this many issues, but looking in the Diagnostic Logs folder I have 830 reports between Crash Reports, Diagnostic reports, hang Reports, Shutdown Stall reports, Spin Reports.  These reports all created since 24th February this year.  So in a little  over a month 830 'issues'

    Well you could go with either the Mac Pro forum or the Mavericks forum... If you do create a new post, I'd post a new EtreCheck and provide a little history of your problem.

     

    I only quickly glanced at your listing... I can see that you have a lot of items being loaded.  When you started with a Safe Boot, it ignores a lot of stuff at boot.  So I'm pretty certain you have stuff on your machine that is either not compliant with Mavericks or perhaps conflicting with your other software.

     

    As soon as I see software like MacCleanse the red flags go up.  Software like this ultimately does more harm than good.  I highly recommend that you get rid of it.  I've been running OS X ever since they switched from OS 9 and I can tell you, that in all those years I have never had any antivirus or system optimization or whatever they want to call it installed.  You don't need it.  I have been running high end software on my Mac for years.... both in Windows (bootcamp) and OSX.  It is completely capable of managing itself just fine.

     

    You need to identify just what software on your system is absolutely necessary and discard the rest.  Ideally you would do this with a erase/install.  Verify that you have the latest version of any software and drivers for the OS that you are running.  Obviously do a back up first, but I highly suggest that your reinstall your applications from their original installers or software discs and not just copy over the install as it was from a back up.  You'll want a fresh install that hasn't been tainted with add-ons and plugins added over the years.

     

    In the end, the one who does the most harm to the system is the person putting stuff onto it.  It's why the system always seems to work better after a clean install... you haven't added anything to it to mess it up yet.

    I remember putting Mac Cleanse on once, a long time ago, to remove something or other but removed it after first use..

     

    I too am very wary of all these apps , I see them all the time on Windows machines, so i agree with you totally.

     

    When i started to use the mac, i was unable to find any "Add Remove' programs section as on a Windows machine, but I as told "No, you don't need that with a Mac, you just delete the app and that is it. Well i never did believe that .

     

    I had asked a few times on here about doing  a clean instal, but som many times have been told, no that is just a Windows thing, don't need it with a Mac.  i always thought that was BS ,   With my old Windows machines I used to do a clean re install from a Clean Disk image every 12 months or so.  From advice on here that clean installs were overkill on a Mac, I never bothered...looks like that was BS too.

     

    The biggest issue I find with doing a clean install on Mac is migrating the mail app over to the new installation.  On MS outlook, it was a matter of copying the Outlook.pst file, and that was it..done , messages, settings , rules, folders, contact etc, all imported to the new machine .  mail seems to make ti so much harder to do it.

     

    With over 800 crash or similar reports int eh Diagnostic folder in the last month, I thing kthe time has come to do that clean install, and make a disk image that I can go back to every 6-12 months and start again with a clean install
