Wi-Fi and bluetooth must be on for both devices and each must be awake.

Mar 24, 2015 2:09 PM in response to johnmoran8by SergZak,★HelpfulYou may indeed have it on your Mac but to Airdrop between the Mac and an iOS device, the Mac needs to be of a certain "vintage" conatining the newest Bluetooth chipset and also be running OS X Yosemite.
Briefly, to Airdrop between your Mac and your iOS device, your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed.
