I just upgraded to Mtn Lion op system but Java does not work or show up, do I need to change setting in permissions?

I have gone to system permissions but the java icon does not appear. Yet when I downloaded java 1.8.40.27, and try to install the Java, it says "A newer version of Java is already installed. You are trying to install 1.8.40.27, however 14.9.0 is already installed."

Any ideas what to do?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Try running the Java test to see what results you get.

Thanks, Eric. It didn't work because it said it couldn't find the java. I re-installed the operating system and now the Java works. Must have been some glitch when the operating system loaded earlier this week. Thank you for your help.
