Trying to restore factort settings, it is asking for password, however we have never put a password on it?!

Never had this happen before, I have reset others, never been asked for password? We have not put one on.

Try your Apple ID PW and other PWs you use. If you have an iTunes backup:

Sounds like it is the Restrictions (Settings>General>Restrictions) PW. If y do not know it

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
