Do you have your WiFi turned on?

Does Activity Monitor show com.apple.geod as not responding or crashed... it's required for location services to work.

Is there an arrow icon on your Finder bar when you launch Maps?

Obviously Wi-Fi needs to be enabled as Eric pointed out.

Yes, I have Wifi on and rather than my usual ethernet connection, I changed my Airport to create a network and connected that way. There is no arrow like there is on my iPhone Maps app. I didn't know about the Activity Monitor but will check that tonight.

While Maps is running, open Activity Monitor and in the search field search for:

    com.apple.geod

If it does't find it, locations services is not running.  If it finds it and it is in red or says anything like crashed or not responding, the location services has crashed.

The fact that there is no arrow on the menu bar while Maps is running suggests that location services is not running.

    You might try this:

    Turn off your Wi-Fi (computer's Wi-Fi, not your modem/router).

Go into System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy.

    Select Location Services.

Click on the Lock to unlock it.

Uncheck any applications that are enabled in the list, then uncheck Enable Location Services.

Click on the Lock to lock it.

From the Finder bar, hold option key down then select Go > Library, release the option key.  Open the Preferences folder and locate com.apple.GEO.plist.

    Delete this file.

    Restart your system.

Then go back into your System Preferences as you did before and reenable location services and enable it for Maps.

    Then turn on your Wi-Fi.

    Launch Maps.

If the arrow icon does not appear, open up Activity Monitor to see if com.apple.geod is present as you did before.

Let us know if location services is now running or not.
