iMac (mid-2010) as external display for Surface Pro 3

Has anyone been able to successfully connect a Surface Pro 3 to a 21.5 iMac (mid-2010) to use as it as an external display? I tried using Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable and that did not work. I tried the Apple Thunderbolt cable as well and no luck. Please help!

Hardware-based Target Display Mode--which is what you seem to be trying--works only Mac-to-Mac. Here is Apple's article on TDM:

You may be able to use a software solution. Please see this:
