Sudden inexplicable slowdown of all applications.

I've been running Yosemite since it released without any problems until a couple weeks ago when I decided to download the beta that included the new Photos app (my mistake). The slowdowns started right after that so I attributed it to the beta and decided to use Time Machine to revert myself back to regular Yosemite. That seemed to fix the problem for a few days, but now I'm back to the random slowdowns. Here's my EtreCheck:

Problem description:

Everything has suddenly slowed down considerably. Spin wheel of death every few clicks. Hangs for 5-10 seconds before resuming normal speeds.

You could have a disk that's beginning to fail. First and foremost make sure you have a current backup of your boot drive. Then Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk and disk permissions. Reboot and rerun Etrecheck.

This is another of the Google apps that constantly "calls home" and can slow down performance.

I'd also remove
com.google.GoogleContactSyncAgent.plist. Personal experience has shown Google apps to install lots of call home software that slows down performance and sends back personal info regarding your Mac. I've uninstalled all Google apps. However, that's just a personal preference.

Also Growl isn't necessary. Yosemite has its own building notification feature. I'd remove it.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Old Toad, thanks for the reply. I've gotten my disk errors down to 5 errors (see new EtreCheck below), but the problems persist. I was not able to get rid of HP IO as I could not find the file through all the searching I did in finder. Is there another way to uninstall this?

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. Trying to repair the volume is either pointless (if you have backups) or the worst thing you can do (if you have no backups.)

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

So I've actually been thinking about adding an SSD drive to use as my new start up/application drive anyway, and using the existing hard drive as extra storage for files, photos, and videos. But at this point even that wouldn't completely solve my problems as using that drive, even just for storage, would still be susceptible to failure, correct? I just want to know all my options before heading to a Genius appointment and being told how expensive it'll be to fix.

Thanks again.

If you are considering adding a SSD, then you should replace the internal HD and also add a SSD. However if you decide to take that path an Apple Store will not do the work. They likely will replace the HD however adding the SSD they won't touch. If you take the machine to an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area they are more likely to add both. You can contact one by clicking https://locate.apple.com/country. If you are in the USA, DO NOT take it to a Best Buy!!!!!

Thanks for the reply! After doing some research and considering how cheap they've gotten, I decided to go ahead and buy a 256 GB SSD as well as a 1 TB HDD for media storage. I've also done the OWC research on how to DIY the replacement of both drives, and feel confident there.

My question now becomes, how do I get things running again once both new drives are installed. I have a fairly recent Time Machine backup on an external hard drive, but how do I tell the Mac that I want just the OS and Applications on my SSD, and the rest of my media on the HDD? I know I wouldn't be able to just recover the full backup on the SSD from my external HDD backup and then manually move things over to the new internal HDD because I'm currenlty using up around 500 GB of space, and the new SSD is only 256 GB. What steps to I need to take for a smooth install?

The easiest method to do it is to get another EHD (OWC Mercury Elite Pro is highly recommended) and create a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. In your case I'd recommend CCC because it will restore the recovery partition where SD will not. Clone your existing drive (while it's still alive) to the clone, test to see that it works and then install the new drives in to iMac. Once installed then boot from the cloned drive, format the new drives and restore from the clone to the internal drives and you are done!

This will give you another advantage when it comes to backup. Currently you have TM as a backup, this is a good start but it's only that, a start. Many experienced users have 2 or more backups, when it comes to backing up redundancy is smart because a backup can fail too. Also, with a bootable backup you can use that to boot from in the event of an emergency.

Thanks! So when I restore from the clone drive to the new internal drives after I've formated them, will I be able to choose which drive holds the OS and apps and which drive holds my media? Since my ssd won't have enough space to hold everything on the cloned drive?

Unfortunately not, when you restore it restores everything to the drive you specify, in other words if you want the SSD to hold everything you need to configure it that way. One thing you can do though is before doing this process is to move large libraries (Photos, music, movies normally) to external HD's so that your startup drive is pretty small. I have a 256gB SSD in my iMac that is my startup drive, however I have several terabytes of music, photos and music all stored on EHDs which are connected to my computer. That way all I have on my startup SSD is OS X itself, some critical files and my apps and I still have about 120GB of free space on it.
