Why can't I delete my books from iCloud?

I want to completely remove ALL of my books so that it appears I never had any books on my iPAD. I want to be able to have the "hide iCloud books" logo/link off and not show any books. I've done everything I can think of, even going into the iTunes Store to remove them from my purchases, but they still show up. Please, someone tell me how to get rid of my books COMPLETELY.
