When I drag a photo from the desktop to iPhoto, I can't find it. Where is it placed? I'm using version 9.6. My old version of iPhoto always put new photos at the end of the events list.
Depends - how are your events sorted (view menu ==> sort events) - that and the metadata of the photo determines where the event will be shown

Check the View menu to see how the sort options are set:
Ascending must be selected to get the newer Events at the bottom.
I like to sort by title. When I sort by date, it does put the new photo at the end, but when I leave it sorted by title, I can't find it alphabetically.
Thanks. This does work, but I prefer to sort my events by title. When I sort by title, I can't find it alphabetically. I guess I can change the sort to date when I drag pictures from the desktop, then re-sort back to title when the new imports are put in the proper folders.
All you need to do is select the photo in the Last Import smart album, Control (right) - click on it and select Show Event from the Contextual menu.
When the Event is shown at the top, click, on it and rename.
