Q: Macbook Pro 2011: slow after yosemite upgrade

Hi,

I recently upgraded to yosemite, and during the installation, the installation bar stopped at about halfway and stayed there for hours. Knowing that it was going nowhere, I powered the computer down and turned it on again. After this, the installation appeared to be completed because it let me actually use the computer, but it was painfully slow. So I redownloaded yosemite and tried to reinstall it. However, the installation got stuck at the same spot, and another manual reset resulted in use of the computer, albeit at a snail's pace.

So I tried to reset the PRAM, then i tried starting in safe mode, then i tried booting normally, none of which worked. After reading on these forums, I found out about Etrecheck, I was able to download it and ran it yesterday. Here are the results:

Problem description:

It's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

I concur with Linc Davis I just repaired 2 Macbook pros 2010 and 2011 today the best solution is this. Keep 4gb ram in your mac if you can put more then go for it the more you put the faster and better. Second buy an SSD Hard drive at best buy or any store of your choosing. I found it to be better with warranty at best buy you get 4 year warranty total on hard drive. For some odd reason some 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 macbook pros seem to respond way better with SSD when you load yosemite you will notice a drastic change not only in performance but speed over all meaning internet, programs, etc. Performance is not the same on 2007 thru 2009 models.

Remember the key to all macs is memory, and hard drives preferably SSD when you get one install it and when you turn it on connect to the internet VIA cat 5 cable hold the R button down then turn on Promise you that you will see a drastic change

Have you had issues with your GPU?  Apple has finally addressed the defective GPU's we have in our early and late 2011 MBP's.  I took mine in yesterday and they ran a GPU test and mine was actually fine!  Then they ran a separate full system and hardware check and saw that my logicboard, optical drive, and battery need repair...  That would typically cost about $900-$1,000 for repair, BUT they told me about a $310 flat rate repair deal Apple does for customers after apple care expires!

Thank you for replying. Right now Time Machine does not want to cooperate, so could you please key me in on those other ways to back up my computer? It would be greatly appreciated.

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive or other storage device to hold the data.

    1. Start up from the Recovery partition, from Internet Recovery, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.

If you use FileVault 2, then you must first unlock the startup volume. Select its icon ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. Enter your login password when prompted.

    2. If Method 1 fails because of disk errors, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.

    3. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

    4. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
