Scion xb appears to be crashing my iPod Touch

I have a 2009 Scion XB. I have played my old 20GB iPod on it for years and then I started having connectivity issues, I would get "communication error". I bought a new cord. Same problem. I bought a used iPod Touch about three months ago. Initially, it worked fine. Then one day the iPod was frozen and would not play or charge. I had to do a factory reset. The next time I plugged it into the Scion it worked for about 10 minutes, then the sound stopped. iPod continues to play but no sound comes out. Then a few minutes later it locks up again and needs to be reset again. This has happened four times now. Thoughts?
