my ipod keeps disconnecting when im trying to restore it in recovery mode, what do i do?

I forgot my password so I tried it several times and I couldn't get it so it says i have to plug it into itunes. I've never plugged it into Itunes so I put it into recovery mode but each time it disconnects while updating. I Dont understand why, there is no error code or anything like that, it just disconnects.
