irritating virus warning pop up

My iMac has been infected with some pop up advertisement that insists that I call there Mac Support Virus Removal Malware Support phone number because my iMac has been infected with a virus and it claims that I need to be shown how to disable pop ups. My pop ups ARE disabled in Safari preferences and the only pop up that is irritating me is this insistant ad that opens up growers pages and pop up windows to warn me and insist that I call their number. I finally called and they wanted to scan my computer and then assess the fee to "fix" it. How do I get rid of this constant sales pitch to call them or should I be concerned!?

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, close Safari, and then launch it with the Shift key held down. If that doesn't work, temporarily disconnect the computer from the Internet.

This seemed to work for a day. Not only does this "security" company keep popping up to ask me to have them fix my problem, but they are actually correct - I am being invaded by pop up ads everywhere all over the safari browser. It's very irritating. I would like to fix it myself without calling that "security" company.

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

Thanks Niel. I posted "this helped me" on another post and now for some reason page won't let me click on this solved my problem for your post.
