rtf files show in spotlight and finder reveal arrow file but not in parent file

When I open an alias file on my desktop (OSX 10.5.8) none of my rtf files appear, only .doc files show.. Also if I go to the finder,home,documents file open said file, not in there. However if I click the reveal arrow in finder documents they appear and can be opened. The same happens when I go to the dock and click on documents, open said file, nothing. If I mouse over to contextual menu they are there and can be opened. They also come up in spotlight. I've tried repairing permissions, restart in safe mod. Nothing helps. Any ideas please?

Max Mini Powere PC G4, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Look at the tools here to find the RTF files directly, without Spotlight's help:

http://www.osxbytes.com/ - iFileX (note the MacUpdate link provided on osxbytes page has a Malware advertisement for MacKeeper, do not download).

Thanks. This helps me find the files but, I'd still like to know why they appear with the reveal arrow but not in the parent or alias file? Any ideas?
