why does my iPod say "assessory not supported" when i plug it in

i have a iPod 5th gen and an iPhone 5s which both run on ios 8.1.1. when ever i try to plug ether of them in a pop up says that the assert is not supported. i have tried to clean out the port and it is still not charging. what can i do at home?

iPod touch (5th generation), iOS 8.1.1, iPhone 5s

That error typically means a bad cable but can be a bad iPod

- Try another cable. The cable for 5G iPod (lightning connector) seems to be more prone to failure than the older cable.

- If a 5G iPod

- Try another charging source

- Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
