finder file info again stopped showing

Question

iMac 7,1; Mac OSX 10.6.8My user preferences have become modified/corrupted at least twice recently, and I&#x27;m wondering what is the cause.Back on 5 March 2015 I posted that finder had stopped showing file info Finder stopped showing file info, and when I followed the advice given by a responder (to back up, locate Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, remove to desktop, then restart) the problem was resolved. A couple of days ago, however, some com.apple.stuff was in my trash inside a Recovered Files folder. I emptied trash, thinking that the preferences would regenerate themselves. But yesterday I detected that Finder again was not showing file info, and this time, the fix didn&#x27;t work. I ended up using Time Machine to restore the entire Preferences folder in my Library to a few days back. Restarted the machine. Then ran repair permissions. Restarted again. For now, Finder does show file info as it ought. But why does this happen? The iMac has been running very slowly also. Disk capacity is 61.84GB available out of 319.73GB, so shouldn&#x27;t be a memory issue. Help?

Your Belkin router monitor is crashing repeatedly it appears. Try turning it off or uninstall the software using Belkin instructions.

Adding to Eric&#x27;s observations, I think your RAM memory is borderline inadequate.   Though not showing too much here, Chrome can eat memory.   I think changing the IGb units to 2Gb units will help.   Try to disable Growl for a while, too.   It has been subject some adverse comment in the past.

Thank you, Eric and seventy one. Thank you for pointing me to the Etrecheck. I wasn&#x27;t at all aware that the Belkin monitor was crashing. I&#x27;ve disabled Growl and unticked the launch on startup option. I&#x27;m trying to download the latest setup software for my Belkin. In the meantime, please can you clarify what you mean by &#x27;I think changing the IGb units to 2Gb units will help&#x27;?The machine has just 2GB RAM. I know, I could use a bit more RAM, but I can&#x27;t afford a new machine right now, and it&#x27;s hardly worth it to add in more RAM on this 7-year-old obsolete iMac. : (Do you mean I should allocate more virtual memory to Chrome and other applications? How should I do that?Are any of these issues possibly connected to the repeated modification/corruption of my preference files that affect Finder?

I think your machine will take 4Gb of Ram, possibly more.   Go to Apple logo &gt; About this mac &gt; More info.   Then copy or paste the first eight lines ONLY into your reply.   You should be able to add some additional memory yourself.   It isn&#x27;t that expensive.   We&#x27;ll tell you where to go after you send this new information.Do not include your Machine&#x27;s serial numbers etc, just the first eight lines.

Your machine will take 4Gb, probably 6Gb.  Ideally you will need to buy 2 x 2Gb and insert them into the two slots currently occupied by the 1Gbs.Many people on these forums speak well of the following memory suppliers.
