In what directory is the iPhone backup?

I've lost all the contacts on my iPhone. It's backed up on my iMac. Is there a way to view that backup? I'm hoping it would be semi readable so I can re-enter them. Thanks. James

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to restore data from a backup. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.


Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support

Use these steps if you have a new iOS device, or you need to to restore after a factory reset:


  1. Connect your device to the computer that has your backup.
  2. Install the latest version of iTunes.
  3. Choose File > Devices > Restore from Back up.

What iTunes backs up


Contacts* and Contact Favorites. (You should regularly sync your contacts to a computer or cloud service, such as iCloud.)
