I have an early 2009 iMac need advice

I am new to this forum. As I mentioned in subject I have an early 2009 iMac with 4 GB of Ram. I am up to date with my operating system, running Yosemite 10.10.1.

My problem is that my computer is slow - very slow. It takes forever for the computer to start up and once it up forever for programs to load. Mail is the best example taking it a minimum of 5 minutes to load and in the mean time nothing else will load. RecentlyI started running the disk utility and repairing permissions. That helps a tiny bit. I also got CleanMyMac 2 and use it as well. In reading some of the forum I noticed someone suggested to run an EtreCheck report and post its report which I have done. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Crhutch,

I see several issues in your report. First I you have installed CleanMyMac which is considered malware by many on these forums. This app is a fraud and tends to create many more problems than it says it solves. You will need to first fully uninstall it, to do so you will need to research how.

Next is your HD is getting close to being full, I would recommend moving some larger libraries, for example iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie to an external HD. This will free up precious space. Finally I see your computer is starved for RAM, this may be caused by the first issue noted.

After you think you have fully uninstalled CleanMyMac run another EtreCheck report and look for any traces of it, if you still find some then your first attempt was not successful.

Good luck.

Pay attention to what rkaufmann87 is saying, because I agree.

Chrome is very resource intensive.

It is possible you are running other memory intensive apps.

You have a lot of 3rd party additions loaded at boot time. Do you really need all of them? Even after you get rid of MacCleaner (as suggested by rkaufmann87).

Do you really need the seagate and WD drive software? The Mac is fairly good at accessing disks without 3rd party intervention.

Any of the 3rd party additions listed by EtreCheck that you do not need, you should consider uninstalling.

That fact that you have

171.19 GB Page-ins

in just about 4 days, says you have about 0.5megabytes per second. That is a huge load on your disk drive.

Either cut back on the RAM intensive apps, or get more RAM. At least 8GB, but if your Mac supports it, 16GB. Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected by the long term forum contributes.

The primary culprit is CleanMyMac2. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions.

If your WD external HDs are just regular external HDs formatted OS X Extended (journaled) connected directly to your Mac you don'd need the WD software to manage it. Uninstall the WD software.

The same goes for the Seagate EHD. It's software is not needed for the Mac to use the drive as a standard EHD. Remove it.

Once you remove the above rerun Etrecheck to confirm they are all gone. Then check to see if performance has improved.

There's no doubt that adding more RAM will make a noticeable improvement in system and application performance. After cleaning out the culprits above check the memory pressure with Activity Monitor for a while to see if it's in the green and constant.

Rerun Etrecheck to check for any killed processes. If none and you have a low Page-out value you may not need additional memory if you're satisfied with the performance.
