Preview buttons

I can no longer download or open PDFs in preview from Safari 8.0.5 on Yosemite, using the buttons that appear near the bottom when you hover over a PDF in Safari. Any clues? I do not have any Adobe PDF plugins in my Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder.
