SIM Card Transfer Help

My father's job gives him the newest version of the iphone. He had an iphone 5s before he was given a 6 Plus. He gave me his old 5s as a present recently. It has no sim card. I performed a factory reset last night and I cannot activate the iphone without a sim card. Can I use the sim card in my main iphone 5c to activate the 5s? And if I do that, could I just use the 5s as my new main phone, (assuming the data plan and carrier transfer over)? Thanks in advance for all advice!
