A $1 sign appears in upper left-hand corner of my Mac laptop.

Was browsing via Safari on my laptop then all of the sudden was no longer able to do so. The a $1 appeared on all of the pages I tried to access. Tried to search via Firefox and the same $1 appeared again.

Any ideas how to proceed?
