iphoto is not responding after launching

i did the update and not sure if i have to many pics but 77GB is not a lot right?? I've tried everything i could think of please help i want my pics back and is there any other photo app i can install to pull my pics off of my iPhone and iPad other than just iPhoto?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

On every Mac is the application "Image Capture" installed. Launch it and connect your iPhone. You can use Image Capture to download the photos from your devices to a folder or to iPhoto or Aperture.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:

what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see in the iPhoto window when iPhoto opens? Just a spinning wheel?
what fixes have you tried?
where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?

what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
