Missing songs from iTunes Playlist

I opened several playlists this morning and found songs missing - an exclamation point and a message The song “(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"

I can find them again.

But why were they suddenly missing?

Thanks!

iTunes uses a catalog file to keep track of your media file locations. It could be the file was not correctly updated or became corrupt for those files. It could be you, or your computer did something to cause the locations of those files to change. If you move or rename folder or file in the iTunes folder the location information may no longer be valid. Your computer itself has its own directory as to where the electronic bits of a file are actually located on a drive and that too can be corrupted (rare). All good reasons for maintaining a backup.
