Bad update 10.10.2 will not boot

After installing 10.10.2 security update, computer boots to gray screen with Apple logo & progress bar that stops 2/3 of the way. I've logged into recovery & re-installed the OS & still doesn't work.

Im almost positive I don't have a bad HD after looking through all the posts with the same issue. I'm willing to do anything I can to retain my data. I've learned my lesson, but I need a solution.

What can I do?

Would this work:

Hook up an external drive & clone the internal drive to the external with disc utility.

Remove the internal drive & install the external

Re-install OS

Would this work? Or what should I do?

thanks,

matt
