Safari has suddenly quit several times with no message or indication of report to Apple. No other applications are affected.

MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)

2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB

Mac OS 10.10.2

Safari 8.0.4

While on my cellphone sitting in front of my computer (inactive but on), no keyboard or mouse activity, Safari just disappears.

MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

If you are on your cellphone - and Safari is on your Yosemite Mac - but not being used -before it quits - it may be that Yosemite is killing it as an inactive program - in order to free up memory for some other auto-mated process.

If you run the EtreCheck after Safari quits -- if Yosemite killed it - then it should be listed on the report I guess in red (have seen it in others).

Its this new thing that Apple did with memory - which may not be such a great idea.

I came back to the forum because Safari just quit again, this time while I had stepped away for some coffee. Never got an email saying anyone had responded to my question.

Here is the initial EtreCheck report. Next I will run AdwareMedic and then remove the incompatible startup items. If problem persists after that, will run EtreCheck again and republish here.

Notes:

I'm on the road, so Time Machine has not backed up lately.

The battery message is interesting, but probably unrelated (since only Safari is affected).

Thanks to all for your help.

Problem description:

Safari quits unexpectedly while computer is idle.

The Genieo adware may be causing the problem. It has been known to cause Safari crashes. AdwareMedic should remove it.

In addition, I'd recommend removing your Sophos anti-virus software. It was once something I recommended, but of late has been causing more problems. Further, there's no Mac malware that is known to be able to infect a Mac running the version of OS X that you have, so Sophos isn't doing much to protect you. Note especially that it didn't do anything to prevent you from installing the Genieo adware, or to help you remove it, so it's not helping much against things like adware either. Be sure to use the Sophos uninstaller that is in your Applications folder, rather than just dragging the Sophos app to the trash.

Finally, regarding the battery issue, that battery does like like it may be in need of replacement soon, but that's not causing the reported problem. In fact, there's really no urgent need to replace the battery if you aren't having a problem with it, and it may not be a worthwhile investment to spend the money on a new battery for such an old Mac anyway.

I have been noticing more and more installation that have both antivirus and adware installed. I'm not saying anything. I'm just sayin'.
