Need to uninstall Microsoft Word 2011

I have OSX 10.6.8 and use Microsoft Office 2004. Lately, when I try to open documents, it will try to open with Microsoft Word 2011. I get the message: The Office for Mac installation did not complete successfully because there was a problem with the installer. I never installed Word 2011, or if I did it was not because I knew what I was doing. I am tired of everything defaulting to open with Word 2011 but I don't know to get rid of it. I can't find 2011 in my applications (at least not where I am looking) and I am scared to uninstall anything because I don't want to lose the 2004 Office that I paid for.

Any ideas?

Your MS Office 2011 may have become corrupted. Reinstalling Office 2011 can address problems that you may be experiencing.

1. find your Office 2011 install disc with the product key # - and only then remove Office according to MS instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768

Or go here to DianefromOregon's site for help removing Office 2011: http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/office-for-mac-2011-remove-office/

2. Reinstall from DVD

3. enter your Product #

After successfully reinstalling Office 2011, update your Office product using the Software update within Office called Microsoft Update or going to the Help menu within Word or Excel or PowerPoint and select Update.

It may take a few times before you get to final upgrade to current Office version. It should be 14.4.8 as of current date.

I tried doing steps in http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/office-for-mac-2011-remove-office/ but so many of the things weren't even found on my computer. For example, there is no "com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist"

There are no files that begin with Office 2011

I don't know if it was ever completely installed. We are working on scholarships and there are forms from internet that maybe when I opened them it opened Word 2011? That is when I first noticed it trying to use 2011....after working on scholarship forms downloaded from the school's website.

Then you apparently posted an invalid question because you don't have Office 2011 installed. Select one of the Word documents with which you had the problem. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With panel select Word 2004 as the Default Application. Now click on the Change All button. You should now be able to open the document by double-clicking on it using Word 2004. This assumes you have Office 2004 installed.

If you upgrade from 10.6.8 to Lion or later, then you will have to replace Office 2004.
