How do I get sound back for my Apple TV

I have just updated the software on my 3rd generation Apple TV and cannot get the sound. It shows the video OK, a TV programme on iPlayer, but no sound. I have checked the connection, checked that the Mac, TV and receiver volumes are all unmated, tried force restarting the Apple TV, tried changing Audio to 16 and turning Dolby Off all to no avail.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 3rd generation Apple TV

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

  1. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
  2. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
  3. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
  4. Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
  5. Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)
