tried to sync music from computer to i-pod but it doesn't work

I have windows 8.1 and tried to sync music from my computer to my I-pod but it doesn't work. Tried to do it manually but got a warning that I had to remove my device before selecting to do it manually. Don't know how I'll get the music over if I disconnect my device. Thanks
